What do you think about the Goth (Gothic) subculture?

I think it is another counter-culture phenomena inspired by a variety of influences by which most of them will argue to the death over. While the roots of the gothic sub-culture may originate from gothic literature and such as you mentioned, most "goth" kids today couldn't tell you anything about it. Just like most counter-culture movements, it's been high-jacked by the mainstream and turned into the "cool thing to do" for socially-awkward teens whose parents are conservative enough in the adolescent's mind to warrant a cultural rebellion, yet liberal enough to let their kid spend their allowance money on Tripp pants at Hot Topic. Of course that's just a very broad generalization of it, and of course there are plenty of people who fit the definition that the more intellectual and refined "goth" would subscribe to, but in the end, the labels are arbitrary at best and alter with the changing cultural zeitgeist. But in my defense, the question was what "you" (referring to "me") think, so that's just my opinion. I'm sure many would beg to differ.
